If you don’t know what this stands for… I pray you never find out…

It means “Cry It Out” and is a sleep method made famous by Ferber. It involves allowing your baby to cry herself/himself to sleep with occasional reassurance from the parents.

Well after a run of good fortune and babies that sleep, Emilie has been slipping backwards every night. Where she once was sleeping for 5+ hours a night, she now is awake earlier and earlier each night… Last night was the final straw. On their 4mo birthday I started the CIO method (what a great present!!). As I sat at the computer at 2am reading about the CIO method (and while Emilie screamed her little head off and I was almost in tears) and had to wonder if I was doing the right thing.

Jason and I have decided to take control back from the girls and have decided to dictate nap time, sleep time, wake time and feeding time. So today they took their first formal nap since their sleepy newborn stage. We created a ritual and put them down in their crib. They have been asleep for one hour with no crying…. can we call this a success?? Let’s see

At my oldest’s 4-month checkup, her ped said she didn’t need to eat in the middle of the night anymore and suggested CIO. It was the hardest thing for us, but our baby finally started sleeping through the night. The most important thing is to stick with it you’re going to CIO. It makes things so much harder if you quit for a few days and try again. Sleep Habits, Happy Child (or something like that) is the best book on the subject.

I thank God every night for Mr. Ferber! Shane slept through the night for about a month when he decided that he’d rather wake up and play 3 times a night! Finally, after thinking I had PPD, my mom asked if I was getting much sleep at night. When he was six months old I decided that I was not going to let this child dictate my sleep habits. It took 4 nights in total and he has slept through the night ever since. The first night was hard, but it got easier and easier every night. It was the best thing I ever did. Now we have to just work on the bedtime routine!

P.S. I can’t wait to see the girls!
